Coach Code of Conduct

Coaches set the tone. Put player wellbeing, development and a sense of belonging at the centre of every experience.

Put player wellbeing first

  • Keep activities appropriate to players’ ages, abilities and readiness.
  • Take injuries and safety concerns seriously. Do not pressure an injured or unwell player to participate.
  • Follow the safety requirements, training requirements and policies that apply to the activity.

Create a respectful learning environment

  • Coach with clear, constructive feedback. Do not use humiliation, intimidation, discriminatory language or punishment that puts a player at risk.
  • Treat players fairly and explain expectations and development decisions respectfully.
  • Recognize effort, growth and teamwork alongside performance. Make space for questions and different learning needs.

Maintain appropriate boundaries

  • Keep communication with minors focused on hockey, transparent and appropriate. Include parents or guardians in direct communication.
  • Avoid isolated one-to-one situations with a minor. Keep interactions observable and follow the supervision requirements that apply.
  • Respect privacy in changing rooms and in the handling of player information, photos and videos.

Model the behaviour you expect

  • Respect officials, opponents, families, volunteers and rink staff, including when you disagree.
  • Do not coach while impaired or engage in conduct that compromises safe supervision.
  • Listen to concerns without retaliation and raise safeguarding concerns through the appropriate channels. Do not promise secrecy when someone’s safety may be at risk.
